ANS: Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday morning (at 8.12am) at Breach Candy Hospital Mumbai. She was 92.
Also known as the Indian Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar passed away at around 8.12 am. She rushed to the hospital on 8 January, after she tested positive for Covid-19, said hospital authority.
She began to show symptoms of recovery within a few weeks but she was was put back on the ventilator on Saturday as her condition started deteriorating, said the hospital authority.
Lata Mangeshkar received the Bharat Ratna Award, Padma Vibhushan Award, Padma Bhushan Award, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for her contribution to Indian cinema. She sung playback for a wide range of Hindi films, as well as Marathi and Bengali.
Born on September 28, 1929 in Madhya Pradesh, Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest of five siblings— Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a Marathi musician and a theatre actor.
In a career that spanned nearly eight decades, the Nightingale of India offered her voice to thousands of songs in 36 different languages.
Maharashtra government of has announced that the singer will be given a state funeral. Her mortal remains will then be transported to Shivaji Park for public viewing before being cremated.
A two-day national mourning period has also been declared in honour of the Bharat Ratna awardee. For two days, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast, and there will be no official entertainment.
