ANS: At least seven Indians were among 10 people killed early Thursday when a major fire broke out in a garage below cramped living quarters housing foreign workers in Male, the capital of Maldives, officials said. The fire broke out in the M. Nirufehi area near the Maaveyo Mosque at around 12:30 am.
Maldivian authorities have confirmed that 7 of the deceased in the Male fire incident were Indian nationals.
Indian High Commission in Maldives said that the identity of one person is still being confirmed. The High Commission said, they are in contact with the families.
Earlier, the External Affairs Ministry said, Indian High Commission in Maldives is extending all possible assistance to the affected Indians and their families in the Male fire incident.
“Maldivian authorities confirmed loss of ten lives,” said Arindam Bagchi Ministry spokesperson. “The initial reports indicate a fire in the building and the Maldivian government has announced a thorough investigation on the matter,” he added.
