ANS: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “essential” in building a consensus at the G-20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, said a top US official.

US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said, “Looking around the world when the United States and (its) President (Joe) Biden look for partners that can truly help carry the load, truly helped move forward a global agenda, India and Prime Minister Modi are very high on that list.”

On Sunday, Finer made the remark while addressing hundreds of Indian-Americans.

“We just saw this in real-time at the G-20 where the prime minister was instrumental in forging a consensus around a joint statement among a far-flung group of countries and in the comments and work that the prime minister has done and others in the Indian government have done to highlight the increasing risk related to nuclear issues,” Finer added, as quoted by NDTV.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said PM Narendra Modi played a ‘key role’ in the successful resolution of differences over the ‘outcome document’ at the G-20 Summit.

White House’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in her press briefing that India played a key role in negotiating the G20 Summit declaration. She also quoted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s quote, “Today’s era must not be of war” while referring to the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

“India played an essential role in negotiating the summit’s declaration. Prime Minister Modi made clear today’s era must not be of war,” White House Press Secretary told reporters on Friday.

The Financial Times also reported that the Indian delegation “played a key role in achieving unanimity among member states.”

At the G20 conference, PM, Modi remarked, “We must return to ceasefire and diplomacy in Ukraine. “World War 2 caused devastation a century ago. Then, leaders sought peace. Now it’s our turn,” he added.
