ANS: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has won the presidential election, extending his power for a third decade. Erdogan defeated opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in yesterday’s runoff voting.
With 99.43% of the vote counted, Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) announced that Erdogan had won with 52.14 per cent, while with 47.86% of the vote, Kilicdaroglu came in second.
Erdogan’s 20-year rule will be extended for another five years as a result of the vote.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Erdogan on his re-election today; expressed confidence in the future growth of India-Turkey bilateral ties and cooperation on global concerns in his speech.
