ANS: Tragedy struck Morocco as the death toll from a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake continues to climb, with more than 2000 lives lost and approximately 1400 individuals reported injured. The disaster has left a trail of destruction and despair, as rescue teams scramble to reach remote areas severely affected by the quake, with fears that the casualty count may rise even further.

The catastrophic earthquake, which struck on Friday night, originated in a sparsely-populated region of the High Atlas Mountains, approximately 71 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh. Registering a magnitude of 6.8, it stands as the most significant seismic event to rock the North African nation in the past 120 years. Sadly, the vast majority of victims are believed to have been in these remote and isolated areas.

Numerous individuals are still feared trapped beneath the rubble and debris of structures that proved unable to withstand the quake’s devastating force. Many of these buildings were of historical significance, adding to the cultural and architectural losses suffered.

Global leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and other dignitaries, have extended their heartfelt condolences to the grieving families who have lost loved ones in this heart-wrenching disaster. As Morocco confronts this tragic earthquake, the world stands in solidarity with its people, offering support and assistance during this difficult time.
