#UGC Issues Warning
ANS: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a stern notification, cautioning students against pursuing MPhil degrees, as they are no longer recognized.
Additionally, the commission has explicitly cautioned universities against offering MPhil programmes, and admissions for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year are strictly prohibited.
However, the UGC has clarified that MPhil degrees awarded prior to the issuance of the new regulations in 2022 will remain valid.
In its public notice, the UGC expressed concerns about a few universities inviting fresh applications for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) programmes. It emphasised that the MPhil degree no longer holds recognition.
The UGC pointed out that the notification highlights Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022, which unequivocally forbids higher educational institutions from offering MPhil programmes.
It’s worth noting that the UGC had previously declared the MPhil degree as illegitimate, instructing higher educational institutions to cease offering MPhil programmes.”
