Thimpu: King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, conferred Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Thimpu on Friday.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award, stating that it is a very significant day in his life. He emphasized that while every award is special, receiving an award from another country signifies that both countries are on the right path. He humbly accepted the honour on behalf of India and its 1.4 billion citizens, stating that it is not his personal achievement but a recognition of India’s collective efforts.
Modi is the first foreign leader to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes his personal accomplishments, leadership, and contributions to strengthening the friendship between India and Bhutan.
The citation of the Order also acknowledges India’s rise as a global power under his leadership and celebrates the special bond between India and Bhutan. The King of Bhutan had announced the conferment of the award during Bhutan’s 114th National Day celebrations in December 2021.
During his visit, PM Modi held talks with the King of Bhutan at Tashichhodzong Palace, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the special and unique friendship between India and Bhutan.
They discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties and explored initiatives to expand collaboration in energy, development cooperation, youth, education, entrepreneurship, and skill development. The leaders also discussed progress in connectivity and investment proposals, including the Gelephu Mindfulness City project.
Modi also had an audience with the Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, where he thanked him for his leadership and contributions to strengthening India-Bhutan relations. They discussed various issues related to the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, as well as regional issues of mutual interest.
