New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal has announced that India is now host to two of the world’s five largest coal mines. Operated by the Chhattisgarh-based Coal India subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), the Gevra and Kusmunda mines have secured the second and fourth positions respectively on this prestigious list, as reported by WorldAtlas.com.
Together, these mines contribute over 100 million tons of coal annually, accounting for approximately ten percent of India’s total coal production. The Gevra opencast mine, operational since 1981, boasts an annual production capacity of 70 million tons and achieved an output of 59 million tons during the fiscal year 2023-24.
It holds significant coal reserves capable of meeting the country’s energy demands for the next decade.
Meanwhile, the Kusmunda mine has made substantial contributions, producing more than 50 million tons of coal in the fiscal year 2023-24 alone.
