New Delhi: Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, assured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday that the safety and security of the Hindu community and other minority groups in Bangladesh will be a top priority.
During their telephone conversation, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, stable, and progressive Bangladesh through various development initiatives. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the protection of all minority communities in the country.
In response, Yunus assured that the Interim Government would focus on safeguarding Hindus and other minorities. An official statement from the Indian government confirmed Yunus’s commitment to these assurances.
Following the discussion, Modi shared on social media: “Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. He assured protection, safety, and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.”
This dialogue comes in the wake of recent violence targeting Hindu homes and temples in Bangladesh, which led to the downfall of the former Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. Social media has been abuzz with images of the attacks, prompting global demonstrations from Hindus seeking security for their communities in Bangladesh.
