Dhanbad: Akhilesh Kumar Sahay, a retired SBI bank manager from Dhanbad and renowned bird photographer known locally as “Panchi Rajan,” is spearheading a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about birds and nature among students.

Sahay, who has been a prominent figure in the birdwatching community, has delivered lectures and workshops at various educational institutions, including IIT Chennai and several schools and colleges across Jharkhand.

Sahay’s workshops feature a compelling slideshow of bird photographs, discussions on the ecological importance of birds, and topics such as climate change. His efforts are aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and increasing students’ awareness of avian species.

In addition to his educational outreach, Sahay has authored and published seven books showcasing his bird photography. His first book, presented to former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, received significant encouragement from the President, leading Sahay to publish additional volumes.

His notable works include: Green Tops in Goa; Glimpses from India’s Natural World; Birds in India; A Pocket Guide to Birds in India; Wildlife for Indian Youth; Birds in Dhanbad; Birds in Goa and Across India.

His publications have garnered praise from renowned bird expert Carol Inskipp, reflecting the high regard for his work.

During his tenure in Goa, Sahay focused on photographing local bird species, resulting in his latest book, Birds in Goa and Across India. Driven by his passion, Sahay invested his retirement savings in cutting-edge camera equipment and traveled extensively across the country to capture bird images and create his books.

In 2021, Sahay established the Indian Birds Photographer Society (IBPS), a national organization dedicated to bird photography and nature conservation. He also founded “Dhanbad Birders,” a local group aimed at promoting birdwatching in Dhanbad, with key contributors including Ankush, Hemant, Parth, and Joydeep. Both organizations operate without membership fees, focusing on the collective goal of bird conservation.

Together, Sahay and his organizations have documented over 100 bird species in locations such as Maithon Dam, Bhatinda Falls, Topchanchi, Tundi, and Baliapur in Dhanbad, leading to the publication of Birds in Dhanbad.

Sahay proudly notes that he is the first Indian to author seven books on birds and nature. He remains committed to his mission of spreading awareness about avian species and nature, with the IBPS poised to continue his legacy long after he is gone.
