New Delhi: Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the Kolkata rape and murder case. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will lead a bench that is scheduled to review the matter on Tuesday.
The case involves the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, which took place on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident has garnered national attention, igniting widespread outrage and protests. Medical professionals across the country have been vocal in their demand for stringent measures against those responsible.
In the aftermath of the crime, the Kolkata Police detained a civic volunteer who is suspected to be linked to the case. On August 13, responding to petitions from the victim’s family and other concerned parties, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation. Additionally, the High Court issued a reprimand to West Bengal authorities concerning the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital that occurred during protests on August 14.
