New Delhi: India’s campaign at the Paris Paralympics started on a high note on Friday as Avani Lekhara clinched the gold medal and Mona Agarwal secured the bronze in shooting events.
Defending champion Avani Lekhara continued her impressive form by winning the gold in the women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event. Lekhara, who had previously triumphed in Tokyo, where she became the first Indian female shooter to win a Paralympic shooting medal, set a new record with a final score of 249.7. This performance surpassed her previous Tokyo record of 249.6 points, underscoring her dominance in the sport.
Lekhara’s journey has been particularly inspiring, given that she was paralyzed below the waist from a car accident at the age of 11. Her achievements have solidified her status as a leading figure in para-shooting.
In her Paralympic debut, Mona Agarwal delivered a commendable performance, scoring 623.1 to secure the bronze medal, contributing to India’s successful start in the medal hunt at the games.
