New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Vadhvan Port in Palghar district, Maharashtra, marking a significant step in the development of India’s maritime infrastructure. The Prime Minister also inaugurated several fisheries projects, distributed transponders, and Kisan Credit Cards to local fishermen.
In his address, Modi highlighted the rapid advancement of coastal development over the past decade. He noted the modernization of ports, development of waterways, and substantial investments made in these sectors. The Prime Minister praised the increase in private investment, which has created new opportunities for the youth and boosted economic prospects.
Modi emphasised the strategic importance of Vadhvan Port, which he said is set to transform the economic landscape of the region. He described the day as historic in India’s journey towards progress, affirming that a developed Maharashtra is crucial to achieving a Developed India.
The Vadhvan Port project, estimated to cost around ₹76,000 crore, is designed to establish a world-class maritime gateway. It will enhance the country’s trade capabilities by accommodating large container vessels, ultra-large cargo ships, and offering deeper drafts. Located near Dahanu town, the port will connect directly to international shipping routes, thus reducing transit times and costs.
In addition, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for 218 fisheries projects worth approximately Rs 1,560 crore. These projects aim to enhance infrastructure and productivity within the sector nationwide. The Prime Minister also launched the National Rollout of the Vessel Communication and Support System, a Rs 364 crore initiative. This project will see the phased installation of one lakh transponders on mechanized and motorized fishing vessels across 13 coastal states and Union Territories.
