Gaya: The French Ambassador to India, His Excellency Mr. Thierry Mathou, visited Sitakund today as part of his tour of Bihar from September 19 to 22, during which he explored the renowned Pitru Paksha Mela. This festival draws millions from across India and abroad, who come to pay homage to their ancestors through the ritual of tarpan.
Arriving early in the morning, Ambassador Mathou expressed a keen interest in observing the arrangements made by the government and local administration for the pilgrims participating in the event. He witnessed firsthand the rituals at Sitakund and engaged with devotees performing tarpan, gaining insight into their experiences.
District Magistrate Dr. Tyagarajan SM briefed the ambassador on the various facilities provided by the state government for the influx of pilgrims during the Mela. He highlighted improvements made since 2022, particularly the construction of the Gaya Dam, which ensures a consistent water supply in the Falgu River, enhancing the experience for those performing Pinddaan.
Before the dam’s construction, pilgrims had to sit on the dry riverbed, but now they can access water throughout the year. Dr. Tyagarajan also mentioned the construction of the Sitapath, a pathway linking Gaya Dam to Sitakund, making travel more convenient for pilgrims coming from Devghat.
Ambassador Mathou noted the increasing number of visitors each year and commended the state government for continuously enhancing arrangements. He specifically mentioned the inauguration of the Vishnupath, allowing direct access from the bypass bridge to the ghat, alleviating traffic congestion.
Expressing his gratitude to the Chief Minister and the state government, Mathou acknowledged the efforts made to ensure the comfort and safety of pilgrims. He praised the continuous cleaning of the river and ghats and commended the police for effectively managing the large crowd. Additionally, social workers were providing assistance to elderly pilgrims, and medical teams were on standby to address any health concerns.
The ambassador’s visit included the presence of several officials, including the City Superintendent of Police and various Additional Collectors, who contributed to the successful management of this significant event. Mathou concluded his visit by wishing for the fair’s successful continuation.
