Dhanbad: IIT-ISM Dhanbad is set to host a three-day National Conference on Emerging Trends in Earth Sciences: Geohazards and Resource Management (ETES 2024) from 27 to 29 September. Organized by the Department of Applied Geophysics (AGP) in collaboration with student chapters and societies, the conference will take place at the Penman Auditorium.
The event aims to provide a platform for advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration on critical issues such as geohazards, sustainable resource management, energy security, and the ocean’s vital role in climate regulation and biodiversity support.
In tandem with the conference, the Department of Applied Geophysics will also conduct GEOCONFLUENCE ’24, a three-day megafest featuring a series of engaging activities for aspiring geophysicists from across the country.
This year’s event promises a blend of learning and innovation, including a 48-hour hackathon, a Geosabha debate and case study competition, a GeoQuest quiz, and a treasure hunt, among other events. Participants can also look forward to instrument demonstrations, alumni interactions, and guided museum tours.
The festivities will kick off on September 26 with Geosketch, a drawing competition for the children of institute staff, held at the New Lecture Hall Complex. A 24-hour hackathon will commence on September 27, encouraging participants to devise innovative solutions to real-world geoscience challenges. Additional pre-event activities include a photography contest, Geovision, and an online quiz, Geotrivia, alongside visits to the institute’s Geological Museum, which houses over 12,000 exhibits of various metals and minerals.
On the second day, September 28, attendees will benefit from Geo Talks by renowned experts, a thought-provoking Geosabha debate on earth science topics, and practical demonstrations during Geotools.
The event will culminate on September 29 with an adventurous treasure hunt, where participants will solve puzzles and uncover clues related to geophysics. The day will also feature the GeoQuest competition, testing students’ knowledge in basic science and earth sciences. The celebration will conclude with a Movie Night showcasing science-themed films that captivate audiences with excitement and intrigue.
This event promises to be a remarkable fusion of academic excellence and engaging activities, highlighting the importance of Earth sciences in today’s world.
