New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s role as the first responder for the Maldives, emphasizing the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. His comments came during a joint press statement following delegation-level talks with Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Modi highlighted India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives through various means, including providing essential commodities, ensuring access to drinking water during natural disasters, and supplying vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. “India has always fulfilled its responsibility as a neighbor,” he stated.
The Prime Minister described the India-Maldives relationship as centuries old, underlining that India is not only the closest neighbor but also a steadfast friend. He noted that the Maldives holds a significant position in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and “SAGAR” vision.
During the event, Modi virtually inaugurated the runway of Hanimaadhoo International Airport alongside President Muizzu. The two leaders also marked the introduction of RuPay card payments in the Maldives, witnessing the first transaction together.
Additionally, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between India and the Maldives, focusing on areas such as combating corruption, judicial cooperation, and youth and sports development.
