Ranchi: The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) is proudly hosting the 1st Surana and Surana-NUSRL National Criminal Law Moot Court Competition.
This online event has attracted 35 teams from various universities across the country. Following an inaugural ceremony held today, the preliminary rounds commenced, with the octa and quarter-final rounds scheduled for November 15, and the semi-finals and finals set to take place on November 16, concluding the competition.
This year’s competition centers on significant issues arising from amendments to the criminal code in 2024, particularly focusing on the validity of trials conducted in absentia and the legality of extended police remands, in line with statutory limits and constitutional rights.
The inauguration featured a welcome address by Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil, who expressed pride in NUSRL’s capability to host such a prestigious moot court competition.
He highlighted the impressive achievements of NUSRL students in various moot court events across India and encouraged participants to embrace healthy competition and maximize their learning experiences.
Justice V. Gopal Gowda, the chief guest, emphasized the vital role of moot court competitions in fostering effective legal research skills essential for aspiring lawyers. He encouraged young lawyers to engage in public litigation and to address challenges in trial processes at both district and high court levels.
Professor Dr. Upendra Baxi, a renowned jurist, shared valuable insights during the ceremony, discussing the differing perspectives between lawyers and judges while underscoring the significance of advocacy within India’s legal framework for justice.
Pritam Surana, from Surana and Surana, a leader in legal academic initiatives, reflected on his contributions to legal education and the evolution of moot court competitions in India.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Soni Bhola, Faculty Chair of the Moot Court Committee at NUSRL, who expressed gratitude to all esteemed guests and participants.
