Washington DC: In a landmark moment of American politics, President Joe Biden welcomed President-elect Donald Trump to the White House on Wednesday, marking the official start of the peaceful transfer of power after a contentious political rivalry.

Trump, who won the 2024 election, is set to be inaugurated as the 47th president on January 20, 2025. At 78, he will become the oldest person to hold the office.

“Welcome back,” Biden, 81, greeted Trump with a handshake in the Oval Office. Despite their history of sharp political differences, the two leaders exchanged pleasantries before addressing the media.

Biden, who had previously criticized Trump as a threat to democracy, emphasized his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition. “I’m looking forward to a smooth handover and will do everything to ensure you’re accommodated,” Biden said.

Trump, reflecting on the significance of the moment, offered a gracious tone, telling reporters, “Politics is tough… but today is a nice day, and I appreciate it very much.”

This meeting marks a stark contrast to the tumultuous 2020 election aftermath, which saw Trump’s supporters storm the Capitol following his loss. Now, with his return to the White House confirmed, Trump is preparing for his second term amid personal challenges, including surviving two assassination attempts.

The historic transition sets the stage for what both leaders hope will be a peaceful and cooperative handover of power.
