Dhanbad: Professor Sukumar Mishra, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM), has been honored with the highly regarded Hingorani Award 2024 by the Bangalore Chapter of the IEEE Power and Energy Society. This prestigious accolade recognizes his exceptional contributions to the advancement of Solar Photovoltaic Systems.

The award was presented to Professor Mishra during a ceremony held recently in Bangalore, where his pioneering research in the development of a reliable microgrid for residential societies was celebrated. His innovative work, particularly in the area of advanced control methods for designing grid-forming inverters, has played a critical role in addressing the dynamic challenges faced by modern power grids. These control methods, which facilitate seamless synchronization between distributed energy sources and the grid, have been rigorously validated through simulations under a variety of operating conditions. Professor Mishra’s research on this topic was notably published in the 2021 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE).

Professor Mishra’s work is of particular importance given the growing global energy and environmental crises. His contributions support the development of distributed generation systems that integrate renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic arrays, fuel cells, wind turbines, and hydroelectric systems, into existing power infrastructures.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Mishra reflected on his journey in the power systems field, noting that his interest in Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices began during his PhD at NIT Rourkela in 2000. His early work focused on the control of FACTS devices, a foundation that ultimately led him to explore the integration of power electronics and renewable energy systems. “This experience gradually evolved into my current research on inverter-based microgrid systems, where I focus on analyzing their stability,” he said.

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Professor Mishra dedicated the award to his family, including his wife, children, and parents, as well as his students, who he credited for their invaluable support throughout his career. “Without their encouragement and support, this achievement would not have been possible,” he added.

IIT-ISM congratulates Professor Sukumar Mishra on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to his continued contributions to the fields of renewable energy and power systems, as his work continues to shape the future of sustainable energy solutions.
