Prayagraj: The Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, has not only attracted millions of pilgrims to Prayagraj but has also captivated the attention of NASA astronaut Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Pettit, sharing stunning images of the event from space, highlighted the vast illuminated tent city at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. He described the gathering as the “largest human gathering in the world,” noting how the spectacle is clearly visible from orbit.

The 45-day festival, which began on January 13, celebrates a blend of spiritual and cultural practices and will continue until February 26. The Uttar Pradesh government has been promoting the Kumbh Mela not only as a religious event but also as a major cultural attraction, drawing a global audience, including celebrities from both Bollywood and Hollywood.

The temporary tent city spans an area of 4,000 hectares, featuring 160,000 tents, 150,000 toilets, and a 776-mile drinking water pipeline. Rooted in Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela commemorates the ancient battle between gods and demons for a pitcher of immortality, rotating among four key locations, with Prayagraj being one of them.

Beyond the sacred act of bathing in the holy rivers, which pilgrims believe purifies sins and offers atonement, the festival is a vibrant celebration of commerce, religious teachings, and cultural exchange. The Maha Kumbh Mela continues to draw millions, offering both spiritual renewal and a lively cultural experience.
