Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a key unit of SAIL, is set to ramp up its hot metal production capacity from 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.55 MTPA. The expansion, valued at Rs 20,000 crore, will significantly enhance production while generating 2,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs, strengthening the local economy.

Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy today launched the ambitious expansion plan, which includes the installation of a new 4,500 cubic metre blast furnace, a thin slab casting and direct rolling facility, a calcining plant, and upgrades to the coke oven and sinter plant.

“This expansion is a crucial step in India’s drive for self-reliance in steel production and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of achieving a 300 MTPA steel industry by 2030,” Kumaraswamy stated. He further emphasized that the investment and technological improvements would not only fortify the steel sector but also contribute to the country’s economic growth.

The minister also highlighted BSL’s commitment to sustainability, revealing plans to reduce carbon emissions from 2.67 tonnes per tonne of crude steel to below 2.2 tonnes by 2030. In addition, the plant is ramping up its renewable energy initiatives, including 30 MW of floating solar power, 20 MW of land-based solar power, and 100 MW of renewable energy sourced through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SECI.

“These steps will optimize energy consumption while maximizing output, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for India’s steel industry,” he added.

Since its inception in 1965, BSL has expanded its capacity from 1.7 MTPA to 5.25 MTPA. The new expansion is poised to further solidify its role as cornerstone of India’s steel production capabilities.
