New Delhi: Following the passage of the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 in Parliament on Friday, Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi have approached the Supreme Court to challenge the bill’s constitutional validity.

In their petition, Jawed and Owaisi argue that the bill violates key constitutional provisions.

Jawed, in his petition filed through advocate Anas Tanwir, claims that the bill imposes “arbitrary restrictions” on the management of Waqf properties, undermining the religious autonomy of the Muslim community.

He further asserts that the bill discriminates against Muslims by imposing regulations that are not applied to religious endowments of other communities.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which outlines the governance of Muslim charitable properties, was passed by Parliament after nearly 20 hours of intense debate. While the opposition has strongly criticized the bill as “anti-Muslim,” members of the ruling benches have praised it as a “historic reform.”

The bill was approved in the Rajya Sabha with 128 MPs voting in favor and 95 against. Earlier in the week, it was passed in the Lok Sabha after a marathon session that stretched from noon into the early hours of the morning.
