Ranchi: In a major urban development push, the Jharkhand State Housing Board is set to establish smart townships in eight key cities across the state, aiming to provide affordable, safe, and modern housing for low and middle-income groups under a new state housing scheme.

The initiative, part of the state government’s urbanization policy, is being executed by the Urban Development Department and will help ease population and resource pressure on existing urban centers. Land identification has already begun in several cities including Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Jamshedpur.

Each township will be developed on smart city lines, with integrated infrastructure such as wide roads, green spaces, schools and colleges, shopping complexes, healthcare centers, community buildings, public transport, and digitized civic amenities.

According to the sources the proposed land allocations by cities are:

Proposed Land Allocation by City:

    • Ranchi – 500 acres
    • Jamshedpur – 500 acres
    • Bokaro (Chas) – 500 acres
    • Dhanbad – 500 acres
    • Hazaribagh – 300 acres
    • Deoghar – 200 acres
    • Chaibasa – 100 acres
    • Lohardaga – 100 acres

The state aims to build at least one lakh homes through this initiative, catering to LIG, MIG, and HIG (low, middle, and high-income groups).

Urban Development Secretary Sunil Kumar has written to the Deputy Commissioners of the respective districts, instructing them to begin land identification and submit development proposals. While government land will be prioritized, acquisition processes may be initiated if required.

The smart township project is expected to usher in a structured, inclusive, and modern urban living experience across Jharkhand, while decongesting overburdened cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, and Bokaro.
