Bokaro: In a significant step towards enhancing workplace safety, Bokaro Steel Plant has launched a state-of-the-art toxic gas monitoring system, focusing initially on carbon monoxide (CO) detection. The innovative system, based on LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) technology, was inaugurated by Birendra Kumar Tiwari, the Executive Director (Operations).
Chief General Manager (EMD) Gulshan Kumar provided detailed insights into the project’s background and its expected long-term benefits. He emphasized the plant’s digital strategy, particularly in the Energy Management Department (EMD).
The IoT gateway serves as the backbone of the toxic gas monitoring system, integrating data from the plant-wide CO gas monitor system. This enables real-time monitoring of carbon monoxide levels in the cloud, facilitating swift responses from safety personnel to any detected issues.
Speaking on the occasion Tiwari highlighted the paramount importance of a safe working environment for all employees. He underscored the plant’s commitment to leveraging technology for safer workplaces, setting a benchmark for other industrial establishments as part of the ongoing digitalization efforts.
Assistant General Manager (EMD) Saurabh Singh outlined the key benefits of the new system, emphasizing its real-time monitoring capabilities and alarm features, enabling prompt detection and mitigation of potential gas leaks.
The system’s proactive security measures aim to preempt potential threats, while data-driven insights, trend analysis, and optimized safety protocols enhance gas safety management, facilitating informed decision-making.
The project’s success owes much to the efforts of the BSL gas safety team, comprising A.S. Nandi, GM (EMD), Ashish Baghel, Deputy Manager (EMD), Ravi Raj, S. Raina, Sameer, Sanjeev, D.K. Singh, and Ramesh, along with government officials.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Sharad Gupta, Vice President Sharad Gupta, Chief General Managers Sharad Gupta and Sharad Dutta, Head of Mechanical Operations Manohar Lal, Blast Furnace Head VK Singh, Executive Vice President and Director (EMD) M. P. Singh, and Director of Operations and Customer Care Gulshan Kumar.
