The attack, reportedly carried out by unidentified gunmen armed with assault rifles, occurred on Friday evening, as per Russia’s state news agency Tass. The assailants stormed the concert hall and opened fire, causing an explosion that shook the building and ignited a fire.
This incident marks one of the deadliest attacks in Russia in recent decades.
The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, with reports indicating that the group published a short statement on the ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram, taking credit for the incident.
Video footage circulating on social media depicts the concert hall engulfed in flames following the attack. Law enforcement officials swiftly responded to the scene after the terror unfolded.
The attack happened just before a performance by the Soviet-era rock group “Picnic” at Crocus City Hall. Fortunately, the director of the show confirmed to Sputnik news agency that none of the band members were harmed in the incident.
In a related development, a White House National Security Council spokesperson revealed in a statement to Sputnik that the United States had recently shared information with Russian authorities about a planned terrorist attack against Russia, in accordance with its so-called duty-to-warn policy.
