New Delhi: In a significant move to address the Mpox situation, Dr. P. K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, chaired a high-level meeting today to evaluate the nation’s readiness and public health measures related to the disease. Dr. Mishra emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been closely monitoring the Mpox situation and remains actively involved.
During the meeting, Dr. Mishra instructed state authorities to boost surveillance efforts and implement effective strategies for the rapid detection of Mpox cases. He also called for an enhancement of the testing laboratory network, which currently includes 32 labs equipped for diagnosing the disease.
Dr. Mishra highlighted the need for widespread dissemination of prevention and treatment protocols. He stressed the importance of launching an awareness campaign targeting healthcare providers to improve recognition of Mpox symptoms and ensure timely reporting to surveillance systems.
The meeting was informed that there have been no reported Mpox cases in the country to date. Current assessments indicate that the risk of a large-scale outbreak with sustained transmission remains low. Mpox infections, typically self-limiting and lasting between two to four weeks, usually resolve with supportive care. Transmission occurs through prolonged and close contact with infected individuals.
In addition to the meeting, a video conference was held this morning by the Director General of Health Services, involving over 200 participants. The session aimed to sensitize state health authorities, including Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme units and port health officials.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern as of August 14, citing its prevalence and spread in several parts of Africa. Since 2022, WHO reports indicate that more than 99,000 cases and 208 deaths have been recorded across 116 countries globally.
