Chennai: India has successfully launched its first reusable hybrid rocket, Rhumi-1, from Chennai. The launch, conducted by Space Zone India in collaboration with the Martin Group, marks a significant milestone in the country’s space exploration efforts.
The Rhumi-1 rocket utilized a mobile trajectory and carried a payload of 50 pico satellites and three cube satellites. It ascended to an altitude of approximately 35 kilometers before returning to Earth within seconds, having conducted a series of experiments during its flight.
The primary mission of these satellites is to collect data for research on global warming and climate change. The Rhumi-1 rocket features a hybrid motor that combines liquid and solid fuel propellants to boost efficiency and reduce costs. Notably, the rocket is entirely pyrotechnic-free, containing 0% TNT, and includes an electrically triggered parachute deployer.
The mission is led by Anand Megalingam, former Director of the ISRO Space Centre and founder of Space Zone India, with guidance from Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, former Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC). Dr. Annadurai highlighted the rocket’s advanced design aimed at enhancing performance and minimizing operational expenses.
