New Delhi: In a ceremonial event marking the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court of India, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the new flag and insignia of the apex court on Sunday. The unveiling took place during the valedictory session of the National Conference of District Judiciary held at Bharat Mandapam.

The new flag and insignia, designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, incorporate symbols of justice and democracy. The flag prominently features the Ashok Chakra, the iconic Supreme Court building, and a depiction of the Constitution book.

Addressing attendees, President Murmu highlighted the critical issue of case pendency within the judiciary. She emphasized the need for collective efforts from all stakeholders to address the backlog, noting that some cases remain unresolved for over 32 years. The President expressed concern over the slow pace of justice in severe cases, such as rape, which often extend beyond a generation, leading to a perception of judicial insensitivity.

President Murmu also pointed out the challenges faced by impoverished individuals in rural areas, who may avoid seeking justice due to fears of worsening their circumstances. She called for measures to improve their access to the judicial system.

While acknowledging improvements in judicial infrastructure and resources at the district level, President Murmu urged continued efforts to enhance these areas.

Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal expressed pride in the Supreme Court’s 75-year journey and stressed the importance of creating a supportive judicial ecosystem for citizens engaged in nation-building.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud detailed the Committee on Reducing Arrears of Cases’ action plan, which includes case management and pre-litigation dispute resolution strategies. He also highlighted the Supreme Court’s recent successful National Lok Adalat, where nearly 1,000 cases were resolved amicably in just five days. Chief Justice Chandrachud reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all, particularly vulnerable groups.
