ANS: The Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021, has been passed by the Lok Sabha.

Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Agriculture Minister, submitted legislation in Lok Sabha on Monday to repeal the three farm rules passed last year and the resulting protests.

Meanwhile, opposition members raised slogans seeking a discussion before the repeal. Speaker Om Birla said, a discussion would be possible if the house is in order. However, as noisy scenes continued, the House passed the Farm Laws Repeal Bill. The Speaker then adjourned the house till 2 P.M.

Notably, the three laws (farm laws) were designed to encourage more corporate involvement in the agricultural market. Trade in farm produce was facilitated, vast inventories of food could be stored for future sales, and a national framework was established for contract-farming using written agreements.

On 19 November Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a surprise announcement to scrap the three farm laws after a year of protests by farm unions, which said the laws hurt their interests.
