Amidst many challenges, SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) successfully registered a huge growth path (169 %) both in production and projects in the financial year 2021-22.
BSL’s major production units have all seen an increase in production. Most of these departments set new yearly as well as monthly production records, said Amarendu Prakash, Director-in-Charge BSL while briefing the media.
“There has also been a reduction in the overall usage of coal, power and energy in technological and economic factors. A new record was reached for coke oven by-products and secondary product sales by the marketing department,” he added.
During 2021-22 BSL recorded a huge annual growth in some major units and products as compared to the corresponding period of 2020-21 includes Coke Oven-Oven Pushing- 9.2 %; Sintering Plant-Gross Sinter- 22.7 %; Blast Furnace- Hot Metal – 12.6%; SMS/CCS – Total Crude Steel – 13.4%; Hot Strip Mill – H R Coil – 20.3%; CRM-1,2 & 3 – CR Selectable (Total) – 30.8%, it stated in a press commineque released by BSL managment.
Similarly, dispatches in 2021-22 also recorded growth as compared to 2020-21 in HR Coil- 12.1%; HR Plate/Sheet – 21.6 %; CR Sable – 22.7% and Sable Steel – 14.9 %.
BSL sets new annual records in gross Sinter Production : 61,21,328 Tons; Hot metal from 4 furnace operations : 42,64,800 tonnes; Crude steel production : 38,34,010 tonnes; HR Coil Production: 39,12,731 Tons; CR Sable (CRM-3): 6,52,095 Tons; Granulated Slag Production: 16,74,655 Tons; Selectable Steel Direct Dispatch: 27,61,185 Tonnes; Granulated Slag Dispatch: 17,34,928 Tonnes in 2021-22.
A new annual record of Rs 201.72 crore (the previous best Rs 106.44 crore in 2019-20) was also set in 2021-22 through the sale of Coal Chemicals. Overall, BSL achieved record sales of secondary products worth Rs 1602 crore in the financial year 2021-22 as compared to Rs 1502 crore in 2020-21.
In addition to these, new monthly records were set in Gross sinter production: 5,63,971 tonnes; Hot metal production from 4 furnace operations: 4,10,133 tonnes; Crude steel production: 3,72,082 tonnes; Cast slab production from SMS-2/CCS: 3,11,014 tonnes; CRM-3 to CR Selectable Production: 68,258 Tons; Selectable Steel Direct Dispatch: 2,85,227 Tons; Granulated Slag Dispatch: 1,99,797 Tonnes in 2021-22.
A daily record of 14,912 tonnes of hot metal production from four furnace operations was also set on 27 March this year.
Other records were also set: Best March in HR Coil Production since inception: 3,52,212 Tons; Best Q4 (Q4) since inception: Hot metal production (4 furnace operations): 11,29,892 tonnes; Cast Slab Production (SMS-2): 8,69,182 Tons; HR Coil Production: 9,90,415 Tons; CR Sable (CRM-3): 1,63,084 Tons; Half Yearly Record in Gross Sinter Production and Sellable CR (CRM-3); Traffic Department recorded the highest daily transfer of total 651 slabs in 23 trips in a single day on 28 March, 2022; Annual record in some key techno-economic parameters like BF coke yield, CDI rate in all furnaces including BF-1, Coke to Hot Metal Ratio, Specific Energy Consumption and Specific Water Consumption.
The other achievements were: Commissioning of SMS New Caster on 13/04/21 (the fastest in 74 days in the country record of commissioning); Best ever daily, half-yearly, and yearly BPP sales achieved; First time in SAIL galvanized high strength higher coating for grain silos from CRM-3; Development of coil IS 277 GP 350 + 450 GSM grade. this import substitution (Import Substitution) is a step toward a self-reliant India.; Bokaro Steel Plant on 24 January 2022 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Environmental Clearance for Expansion-cum-Modernization of (5.77 MTPA Hot Metal, 5.006 MTPA crude steel).
