Dhanbad: Dr Srikanta Mishra, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian School of Mines (ISM) in Dhanbad, embarked on an enlightening discourse titled “Vedic Graduation Advice and its Relevance in the Twenty-First Century.”

Dr Mishra, renowned in the field of petroleum engineering, shared profound insights into the timeless values of the Vedic Scriptures during an engaging session held at the Penman Auditorium of IIT (ISM).

The gathering, graced by students, faculty members, officers, and staff, was presided over by Professor MK Singh, Dean (Academic), and Officiating Director of the institute. Dr. Mishra’s address was a pivotal part of the Viksit Bharat@2047 discussion series, organized by the Corporate Communications Office of IIT (ISM), which aims to foster meaningful dialogues on pertinent topics.

In a previous session of the series, Captain Yashika Hatwal Tyagi, a distinguished Kargil War Veteran, shared her insights on Gender Equality.

During his visit, Dr Mishra was honoured with the Research and Academic Excellence Award for the year 2022 as part of the institute’s distinguished alumnus award program. Prof. JK Pattanayak, Officiating Director of IIT (ISM), and Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, joined in to celebrate this recognition.

Addressing the audience at the Penman Auditorium, Dr Mishra expressed his deep appreciation for the profound wisdom found in the ShikshAvalli of the Taitirlya Upanishad, a central pillar of Vedic philosophy.

With a remarkable career spanning over 30 years in understanding and communicating data-driven insights for geo-energy resource challenges, Dr Mishra elaborated on the Vedic Graduation Advice, traditionally imparted to students by their AchAryas (teachers) upon completing their studies. He elucidated the key ideals embedded in this guidance, encompassing Satyam (honesty), Dharma (responsibility and righteous conduct), and Swadhyay (self-study).

“Satyam calls upon individuals to uphold truthfulness in their speech, thoughts, and actions, all while maintaining unwavering integrity,” Dr. Mishra emphasized.

He continued, “Dharma encourages individuals to conscientiously fulfill their duties, while Swadhyay underscores the lifelong pursuit of knowledge.”

Dr Mishra further delved into the responsibilities outlined in Vedic scriptures, underscoring the importance of repaying debts to teachers, nurturing physical and mental well-being, contributing positively to society, and taking pride in one’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

Exploring the concept of charity as prescribed in traditional Vedic texts, Dr. Mishra highlighted the significance of giving to those less fortunate with respect, sympathy, and modesty.

In conclusion, Dr. Mishra stressed the paramount importance of respect. He urged individuals to treat their mothers, fathers, teachers, and guests with the reverence accorded to gods and advocated seeking guidance from those who are learned and experienced, echoing the timeless teachings of Acharyas.

Dr Mishra’s insightful discourse provided the audience with profound insights into the enduring wisdom encapsulated within Vedic scriptures, emphasizing its continued relevance and significance in the contemporary world.
