ANS: A distressing incident unfolded today as a section of an under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand collapsed, raising grave concerns about the safety of several workers who are feared to be trapped within the structure. Desperate rescue efforts are currently underway to reach and free the stranded laborers.

The tunnel, intended to link Silkyara to Dandalgaon in Uttarkashi, is a crucial component of the Char Dham Road Project, aimed at reducing the travel distance between Uttarkashi and Yamunotri Dham by 26 kilometers.

The catastrophe struck at approximately 4 am when a significant 150-meter stretch of the four-and-a-half-kilometer-long tunnel gave way. Preliminary reports indicate that around 40 workers could be trapped within the debris.

Rescue teams are tirelessly working to clear nearly 200 meters of rubble obstructing the tunnel’s entrance.

A narrow opening has been established to facilitate the insertion of an oxygen pipe, providing vital oxygen to the workers who remain stranded inside. While authorities confirm that the laborers have access to oxygen cylinders, they acknowledge a lack of direct communication with them.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in collaboration with local police and administrative personnel, are leading the arduous rescue mission.

Heavy machinery, including JCBs, is being utilized to painstakingly remove the debris, with the utmost care and precision.
